Funimation Announces Permanent Closure: End of an Era

In a significant announcement, Funimation, a beloved platform among anime enthusiasts, has revealed that its app and website services are set to be phased out. This decision comes as part of the merger between Funimation and Crunchyroll, which took place in March 2022. Effective April 2, 2024, Funimation will cease operations on its digital platforms.

The company emphasizes that this move is aimed at enhancing the streaming experience for fans while providing access to an extensive anime library. By joining forces with Crunchyroll, Funimation aims to maintain its commitment to delivering top-quality anime content to its audience.

Fans are advised to stay informed about the transition process and explore alternative options to continue enjoying their favorite anime titles.

The Continuous Journey of the Crunchyroll and Funimation Merger Since 2022

Funimation customers may feel disappointed by this development, the decision to sunset the streaming service has been brewing for some time. Following its merger, Funimation began a gradual reduction of features, culminating in the announcement in December 2023 that downloading content and offline viewing would no longer be supported. Users are encouraged to transition fully to Crunchyroll, with most accounts already migrated. Subscriptions will seamlessly transition to Crunchyroll ones, aligning with the latter's pricing structure, and efforts have been made to transfer Watch History and queues to the new Crunchyroll accounts. Customers encountering migration issues are urged to reach out to Crunchyroll's customer support for assistance.

Despite the comprehensive measures taken, it's important for users to note that account transfer may vary depending on payment platform, subscription type, and region. Additionally, disparities between Funimation and Crunchyroll libraries mean that not all content will transfer over. For instance, Funimation Digital copies won't be supported on Crunchyroll, resulting in users losing access to these titles. While the FAQ doesn't address refunds, subscribers in Canada, Chile, those on Legacy plans, and Roku Pay subscribers are advised to review the official announcement for specific guidance.

Meanwhile, Crunchyroll continues to assert its position as one of the largest streaming platforms globally, recently surpassing 13 million paid subscribers. The acquisition of Right Stuf further solidifies its standing as a leading destination for anime merchandise. With its expanded reach, Crunchyroll has been increasingly involved in financing major anime titles, such as Solo Leveling and Metallic Rouge. The forthcoming launch of The Anime Effect podcast later this month will precede the highly anticipated Crunchyroll Anime Awards in March.
